Rutherford Cross is delighted to be working with J&J Denholm Group on a retained basis to appoint a Divisional Financial Controller.

The Company

J&J Denholm has over 150 years of experience operating in four areas which account for £270m of turnover per year.

Denholm Shipping

The fleet comprises three ships: two 38,000 deadweight tonne bulk carriers, 'MV Mountpark' and 'MV Glenpark', which were delivered in 2016 and 2017 respectively; and a 37,000-deadweight tonne bulk carrier, 'MV Wellpark', which was built in 2014. The fleet, which sails under the British flag, is commercially managed by Denholm Coates in London and technically managed by Anglo-Eastern from Hong Kong.

Denholm also has an 11% interest in Hadley Shipping Group, which owns four bulk carriers, one container ship and four roll-on/roll-off ships (ROROs).

Denholm Coates is a shipbroking and commercial management business. It focusses on the international dry cargo market covering bulk carriers, multi-purpose vessels and heavy lift ships. Denholm Coates also provides a specialist service to move cable for the telecommunications industry.

The Denholm Group has a 26% shareholding in Anglo-Eastern, one of the world's leading ship management companies that technically manages over 650 ships from offices around the world.

Background to the Current Opportunity

The role is based in the J&J Denholm head office in Glasgow with the successful candidate reporting directly to the Group Financial Controller.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a 2–5-year post-qualified accountant to take the next step in their career. The post-holder will take ownership of management and financial accounting for one of Denholm’s most successful and complex divisions. Given the diverse nature of the group’s operations there will be the potential for the successful candidate to grow and develop in different areas.

Main tasks/responsibilities:

  • Overall management and preparation of the month end financial reporting for all Shipping entities and the divisional consolidation, including financial analysis and commentary
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are completed accurately and within reporting deadlines with any queries resolved in a timely manner
  • Leading the annual budget and twice yearly re-forecasting processes
  • Ensure quality control over financial processes, transactions and reporting
  • Implement improvements and developments to management accounts outputs and wider business processes
  • Ensure compliance on all tax related matters: including VAT filings, and other taxes
  • Actively involved in cash management ensuring that the group cash position and forecasts are accurate, understood, managed and in compliance with banking covenants
  • Supervise and manage finance department staff
  • Develop and document business processes to maintain and strengthen internal controls, supporting Group Finance to develop procedures for ensuring strong internal controls and compliance with corporate policy
  • Support accounting system implementations and upgrades
  • Leading year-end statutory close and audit process, including production of the year end accounts, supporting schedules and acting as a point of contact for external auditors
  • Build effective working relationships with operational and divisional finance teams
  • Assist in presenting reports to senior executives, stakeholders, and board members.
  • Ad hoc projects, analysis as required

In addition to duties as Divisional Financial Controller, the post holder will also assist the Group Financial Controller on group accounting duties such as:

  • Preparation of management accounts for the Group’s Shipping division
  • Supporting and assisting the Group Financial Controller with:
    • Monthly management reporting, including the consolidation of Group results
    • Budgeting
    • Forecasting
    • Year-end activities
    • Liaising with external auditors
  • Assisting with Group, internal audit, treasury and cash management activities

Preferred Candidate Background

The position requires a high calibre individual who has strong interpersonal skills, is detail orientated and possesses excellent technical knowledge. A summary of the key candidate requirements are as follows:

  • Qualified accountant with appropriate post-qualification experience (preferably CA)
  • Strong technical foundation in accounting
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills combined with business acumen, pragmatism and a good sense of diplomacy
  • Proven ability to build relationships at all levels
  • Highly developed oral, written and presentation skills
  • Motivated self-starter with a flexible working attitude
  • A strong team player, with a desire to make a significant contribution to the Finance Department
  • Excellent IT skills including MS office and a good working knowledge of accounting systems
  • Prior industry experience is advantageous


Salary:                              £45,000 - £50,000 (depending on experience)

Bonus:                              Discretionary annual bonus based on personal and company performance

Pension:                           Employee contribution 2.5% and employer 12.5%

Holidays:                          30 days (including bank holidays)

Working Hours:                35 hours per week (there is currently a trial of a working pattern based on 3      days per week office, 2 days home)
