Rutherford Cross is delighted to be retained by James Jones & Sons to appoint a Head of Finance.

James Jones & Sons Ltd is a long-established, family-owned UK timber business operating across harvesting, sawmilling, engineered timber, pallets & packaging and distribution. The company runs around 25 sites domestically, with additional presence in Australia and New Zealand, employing over 2,100 people. Over time, the business has invested in modernisation, product diversification and value-added offerings (e.g. engineered wood products) to maintain competitiveness in a challenging forestry and timber sector.

In recent years, James Jones & Sons has pursued strategic acquisitions both in the UK and abroad to expand its product range and market reach; key examples are the purchase of United Box Ltd and H.G. Timber Ltd in the UK as well as pallet and garden care businesses in Australia. The most recent published figures show that James Jones & Sons posted a turnover of over £500m for the year ending 31 December 2024. Its net assets stand around £500m and the business has an extremely healthy cash position.

The business has real ambitions for further growth in the coming years and this, along with upcoming ERP implementation projects and succession planning, has identified the need to appoint a Head of Finance.

The appointed individual will have the benefit of working alongside the Group FD and Group FC who will share their knowledge of the business and allow the Head of Finance to manage and develop the team. The objective of the role will be to implement more robust financial controls and processes, driving change and making better use of new ERP systems and financial analysis tools.
