Rutherford Cross recently launched a new networking series, ‘She’s in Finance’, bringing together ambitious women in finance who are at a similar stage in their careers. Through this small-group format, we provide a space to share experiences, exchange insights and learn from inspiring guest speakers.
Rutherford Cross Consultant, Christina McLean, ran the first instalment of this new series in Glasgow last month. She shares an overview of the session and the key themes explored.
At Rutherford Cross, we are passionate about building meaningful communities and networks that create value for everyone involved. We were delighted to welcome Alyson Donaldson, Group CFO of Donaldson Group, as our first guest speaker for our new ‘She’s in Finance’ networking series.
Alyson joined Donaldson Group in 2023, bringing a wealth of experience from senior leadership roles at IVC Evidensia, Vets Now and Diageo. Throughout her career, she has led major transformation programmes, managed global finance teams and built an impressive track record in commercial and operational finance, all while raising a young family.
Alyson shared valuable insights into her career journey, the challenges she has overcome and the lessons she has learned on her route to senior leadership.
Some of the key topics discussed included:
- Confidence is not something to apologise for. Self-belief is essential when stepping into leadership roles
- The value of mentorship, particularly when relationships develop organically
- Future finance leaders are identified not only by their technical capability but by their ability to lead the wider business
- You should take ownership of your own development while seeking out employers who actively support your ambition and potential
As well as providing practical career advice, the discussion highlighted the importance of building a strong professional network and learning from those whose careers you admire or who have successfully navigated similar challenges.
It was encouraging to see such candid and supportive conversations around the realities of leadership, including the challenges women can face in reaching senior roles, building confidence, progressing their careers and balancing professional and personal responsibilities.
A huge thank you to Alyson for sharing her experiences with us, and everyone who attended and contributed to such an engaging discussion. We look forward to building the “She’s in Finance” community over the coming months and welcoming more inspiring finance leaders to future events.
