Rutherford Cross’ Will Dodds looks back on another successful instalment of our ‘Planning Your Career Journey’ series – this time held at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh.
It was a busy night filled with aspirational Accountants from all over Scotland looking to gain insight from our speakers who shared three differing careers to date, the challenges along the way and what advice they would give should they have the chance again.
The speakers on the night included:
- Jenny Boyd, CFO at Circularity Capital
- Steven Naismith, Head of Commercial Services at Edinburgh Airport
- Billy McCarter, CFO at The Artisanal Spirits Company
There were some really interesting takeaways as each speaker in turn talked the room through their career journeys to date, what motived them, and the common knowledge that they hadn’t gone on their journeys with an exact plan.
Each speaker, in their own way, talked about their values/beliefs and what they enjoyed doing that has led them to their current position. In Steven’s case, he has always wanted to make an impact, constantly looking for challenge and keen to develop. Jenny’s journey follows a deep set of beliefs that if you stay true to yourself it will shape the way you work. Billy’s journey started at School where he was motivated by a teacher, ultimately resulting in him doing something he really enjoys.
Each have had their own challenges along the way and it’s reassuring to know that although not everything is plain sailing, if you stick true to your beliefs, it is possible to achieve the ambitions you set yourself.
The presentations were followed by networking and further questions to the panel, whilst enjoying everything the Scotch Malt Whisky Society has to offer.
