Consultant Spotlight – Kamran Chaudhry

Blending his law degree with a strong passion for people, Kamran found a natural path into recruitment, joining the Interim Finance team in Edinburgh at Rutherford Cross. In the Consultant Spotlight below, he reflects on some of the highlights from his time at both Rutherford Cross and the wider Livingston James Group (LJG), since joining the business in 2025.

Can you tell me about your career in recruitment to date?

I left university with a Law degree and no idea what I wanted to do next. I quickly realised that the legal world wasn’t quite the fast-paced environment I’d seen on TV. Instead, I found myself working in sales and events – roles that I genuinely enjoyed, for their energy, pace and people focus.

When I interviewed for my first recruitment role seven years ago, I’ll admit I didn’t fully understand what recruitment was. When I started, the idea that I could play a meaningful role in someone’s life, helping them secure their next opportunity and supporting their career progression was definitely for me.

I started out in high-volume, fast-paced recruitment, and from there, I progressed into a contract digital transformation desk and was the top biller for four years. In 2024, the chance for redundancy came along at the right time and I felt ready for a change. When I met the team at Rutherford Cross, I realised immediately that this business was different. LJG is values driven and relationship led, and it felt like the right place to take the next step in my recruitment career.

What attracted you to a career with LJG?

It sounds cliché, but the people. The interview process was fairly rigorous in comparison to other companies I have met in the past, but everyone was genuine. It was clear from the start that expectations were high, but the tools and help were there to assist.

The knowledge that exists within the organisation from Senior Leadership is second to none. Some of the directors within the business have been recruiting their entire working careers and are never too busy to help. They are also extremely hands-on with their own roles, working 360 recruitment just like everyone else.

LJG works with Scotland’s most reputable employers and I was excited to be part of this.

What do you think makes LJG different from other recruitment organisations?

I had never worked in a recruitment organisation where I felt we were making a real difference in the industry. At LJG, the events we host and the thought leadership we write really make a difference to our clients and candidates.

The way we meet all of our candidates in person rather than just screening their experience on the phone provides a more personal approach, getting to know people and what they are looking for rather than just seeing them as another deal. We are guiding people through big life decisions, and it’s important that we provide them with industry-leading levels of knowledge and expertise.

LJG is a purpose and values led organisation. Is there a particular LJG value that you identify most with?

When working in recruitment, you sometimes feel like you are managing your own mini business. You might be working with your own clients, your own candidates and going to meetings alone.

One of our values is “together we achieve more”, and you definitely feel that value at LJG because although we are all responsible for our own desks and targets, everyone is always happy to help. We always come together to guide or advise each other and the team really live by this value every day.

How would you describe the culture at LJG? Is there a particular activity you enjoy?

The culture is great here – as I said earlier, the people make the business. Everyone holds themselves to a level of professionalism but we don’t get too caught up in the pressure. We get together every quarter and have an update to celebrate success and then go out to let our hair down. It’s important to all of us and really makes a difference.

We have a wellness committee too, which I am on, and often drag the team out for runs or to a pilates class, but we love to bring in cakes to share too!
