Hong Kong is a city known for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour and with its long and irregular coastline it exhibits many bays, rivers and beaches. Located on China’s south coast, it is surrounded by the South China Sea on the east, south and west and borders the Guangdong city of Shenzhen to the north over the Shenzhen River. Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where “East meets West” which is reflective in the culture’s mix of the territory’s Chinese roots with influences from its time as a British colony. This is seen in many examples from the architecture to the great selection of food choices! In addition to the extensive shopping possibilities, Hong Kong’s steep terrain and extensive trail network with expansive views attracts hikers, and its rugged coastline provides many beaches for swimming. Energetic Hong Kong also knows how to party! Drinking venues run the gamut from British-style pubs through hotel bars and hipster hang-outs, to karaoke bars aimed at a young Chinese clientele. The last few years have seen a heartening surge in the number of wine bars and live-music venues, catering to a diverse, discerning and fun-loving population.
