Rutherford Cross are delighted to be working with a large corporate business based in Edinburgh to recruit a Tax Manager reporting to the Head of Tax.

The Role:

Key accountabilities include:

  • Ensure the output, advice and business partnering quality of the tax function is peerless within the organisation
  • Oversee the day-to-day running of the tax team and management of the two direct reports
  • Confidently review compliance output including (but not limited to), VAT, corporation tax, Corporate Interest Restriction, Corporate Criminal Offence, Senior Accounting Officer, group reporting, deferred tax etc. across the UK and Ireland
  • Manage tax mergers, acquisitions, and disposals and the integration of newly acquired businesses
  • Develop relationships, and credibility with stakeholders across the business, shareholders and investors
  • Support the Head of Tax in developing the strategy and operating model for tax across the business and when required be prepared to undertake operational duties as management of the team

Person Specification

Knowledge and experience required:

  • ACA, CTA or equivalent qualification
  • 3-6 years post-qualification experience within a large accounting firm or in house
  • Proven team building and team management skills
  • Ability to work without instruction and deliver effectively under pressure even where there is significant ambiguity and conflicting priorities
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to convey complex technical problems in a non-technical, succinct, and easy to understand manner
  • Willingness to challenge, innovate and drive improvements
  • Be able to build and maintain excellent working relationships with both finance and non-finance personnel across the business as well as with investors and external advisers and HMRC
  • High levels of professionalism, business pragmatism and integrity

Functional / technical skills:

  • Ability to prepare, challenge and review VAT returns
  • Ability to challenge and review Corporation Tax Returns
  • Ability to calculate, challenge and review deferred tax calculations
  • Strong project management
  • Ideally, a combination of corporation tax and VAT knowledge and experience
  • Ideally, some international tax awareness
  • Ideally, some M&A experience
  • Ideally, knowledge of balance sheet and journal processes and an understanding of core accounting concepts
  • Willingness to learn Irish tax rules and concepts
