Founded originally as St Cuthbert’s Co‑operative Association in Edinburgh, the organisation has built more than 160 years of experience serving members and customers across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England.
Today, Scotmid operates a diverse group of businesses including food stores, Semichem health and beauty stores, funeral services, Post Offices and a property division, with around 280 retail outlets and approximately 3,500 employees working across its operations.
Scotmid are seeking a Management Accountant to act as a key finance business partner to retail operations, providing financial insight, analysis, and support to drive commercial performance, cost control, and strategic decision-making across stores and retail channels.
The Role:
- Partner with retail operations teams (e.g. Retail Senior Management, Commercial Teams, Central Teams, Area Managers) to support performance improvement
- Provide financial guidance and challenge to non-finance stakeholders
- Translate financial data into actionable insights for operational decision-making
- Support pricing, promotions, and product mix decisions
- Produce weekly and monthly retail performance reports (sales, margin, costs, KPIs)
- Analyse variances against budget, forecast, and prior periods
- Monitor key metrics such as like-for-like sales, footfall, conversion rates, and basket size
- Deliver clear commentary and recommendations to senior management
- Monitor store-level profitability and identify opportunities to improve margins
- Analyse cost drivers including staffing, rent, shrinkage, and overheads
- Support cost-saving initiatives and efficiency improvements
Role requirements:
- Qualified accountant (e.g. ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
- Strong management accounting and financial analysis experience
- Experience in retail, FMCG, or multi-site environment
- Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills
- Power BI and other data analysis skills
- Strong commercial awareness and business acumen
- Strong communication and influencing skills
- Ability to challenge and support senior stakeholders
- Analytical and problem-solving mindset
- Proactive and results-driven approach
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic retail environment
