Rutherford Cross is excited to be working on a retained basis with Glasgow based law firm, Miller Samuel Hill Brown to appoint a Head of Finance.

Background to Current Opportunity

Head of Finance is an important and high-profile role at Miller Samuel Hill Brown. The post holder will contribute to strategy development and implementation and will use their financial and commercial expertise to positively influence decision-making.

Able to operate in a senior capacity, the Head of Finance will regularly attend and contribute to meetings with the Partners and the Finance Committee. They will work closely with the Partners to develop and implement an overarching financial strategy which supports delivery of strategic objectives and protects the financial assets of the firm.

The post holder will be a leader with the ability to influence, inspire and motivate those around them and will lead the Finance team to a high professional standard fostering a culture of continuous improvement in the achievement of personal, team and corporate objectives across all areas of operational responsibility.

The post holder will display integrity at all times and will work positively with colleagues to deliver a culture of strong financial management and control.

The Role

Location:                Glasgow City Centre

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a strong financial governance environment ensuring financial controls and procedures effectively minimise the risk of fraud or mismanagement and ensure compliance with The Law Society of Scotland Accounts Rules. Ensure that action is taken to remedy shortcomings or deficiencies identified by monitoring processes
  • Production of compliant statutory financial statements and ensure that all other taxation, filing and regulatory requirements are met at all times for MSHB and its subsidiary companies
  • Lead the budget and forecasting process
  • Preparation of monthly management accounts to monitor and report financial performance against plans
  • Using an advisory and business partnering approach, work closely with Partners across MSHB to providing financial support, advice and information to assist budget holders to monitor financial performance, achieve financial objectives and aid decision making
  • Hands on transactional processing in relation to the Firms affairs including, but not limited to; Bank reconciliations, Purchase Ledger, bank payments/ receipts, loan funding, VAT returns
  • Deliver effective cashflow management and maintain key relationships with relevant institutions
  • Deliver hands on HR administration in relation to Payroll and holiday matters
  • Deliver the internal audit plan for ISO 9001 accreditation whilst maintaining the independence and integrity of the internal audit function at all times
  • Responsible for Insurance ensuring all policies are in place
  • Keep abreast of developments across all areas of responsibility to contribute to the development and improvement in these areas
  • Lead, coach and manage the Cashroom team focusing on professional and personal development and wellbeing

Key Working Relationships & Contacts:

  • Internal: Will be part of the senior management of the firm and work across all areas of the business to support the delivery of the firm’s strategy
  • External: Will be first point of contact with MSHB’s financial and taxation advisors, external accountants, banking and loan funding institutions, HM Revenue and Customs, The Law Society of Scotland (Accounts Rules and Certificates), IT and office support suppliers

  • Developing strong relationships across the business
  • Working in organisations with a high degree of complexity
  • Presenting to senior stakeholders
  • Liaising with external stakeholders in a professional manner, gaining trust and credibility
  • Degree qualified with a strong academic track record
  • Professionally qualified accountant (CA, ACCA, ACMA)
  • Ability to present financial information clearly, concisely and in an engaging manner
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including use of Excel
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to identify business improvement opportunities and drive implementation
  • Ability to prioritise and adapt to changing workload effectively
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of accounting standards and developments relevant to the business

Remuneration

Basic Salary:                     £55,000 - £60,000 per annum

Pension:                           5% employee contribution, 3% employer contribution

Healthcare:                       Private Healthcare

Holiday Entitlement:        20 days plus 8 statutory days, plus office    closure between Christmas and New Year

Working Hours:                9:00am-5:30pm (open to a degree of            flexibility)

The company is yet to implement a formal policy however there will be an element of agile working post-pandemic.
