Rutherford Cross Consultant, Ally Deas, shares his experience working within employee-owned businesses. He highlights some of the benefits of this ownership structure from his own perspective below.
In what I thought was a rare coincidence, my last two employers have been employee-owned businesses. On both occasions, I joined the businesses moments after the transition to employee ownership occurred. This unique experience has given me an appreciation for the benefits an employee ownership model fosters.
The employee ownership model promotes a positive working culture, motivates employees to take ownership, and aligns everyone’s efforts towards a common goal. From the moment I joined these businesses, I felt a sense of belonging. I share values with my employers and colleagues, which makes every day at work feel meaningful. This alignment of values is not accidental; it is a deliberate part of the recruitment process and throughout my interviews, unbeknownst to me, I was being measured against these values as well as my competence.
Our purpose and shared values create a truly positive working environment for all employees. These underpinned the move to employee ownership, making the transition seamless. It’s not just about the business structure; it’s about the people, values and shared ethos that make you feel at home.
The ‘secret sauce’ of employee ownership is ensuring you take personal responsibility for your work, knowing that your contributions directly impact the success of the business and the others within it. This sense of ownership has driven me to add value to people’s lives through my work which I find incredibly fulfilling.
My experience with employee-owned businesses has been transformative and has shown me that when values align, and ownership is shared, together we achieve more.
