The Digital Finance Function: Insights from Aberdeen Finance Leaders Event with RSM

Rutherford Cross recently partnered with RSM to host a roundtable discussion in Aberdeen, bringing together 10 senior finance leaders from a range of sectors to explore the evolution of the digital finance function.

One of the most prominent themes was the growing role of artificial intelligence within finance. RSM shared examples of how AI can help accelerate processes such as board reporting, improve the speed and accuracy of forecasting, and support more informed decision-making. However, the conversation highlighted that AI adoption must be approached carefully. Concerns around data security, privacy, and the potential impact on roles within finance teams remain front of mind.

A key takeaway from the discussion was that organisations should continue to challenge new technologies and “ask AI to prove itself” before relying on it for critical business processes.

The group also discussed automation in practice, with remittance reconciliation highlighted as a good example of where technology can drive efficiency by reducing manual effort and improving accuracy.

Another important topic centred on finance system implementations. While organisations are often tempted to view a new finance system as the solution to existing challenges, attendees agreed that technology alone is rarely the answer. The quality of legacy data was identified as a critical factor in the success of any system migration. Ensuring data is accurate, consistent and up to date before implementation can significantly reduce complexity and improve outcomes.

The discussion reinforced that building a digital finance function is about more than adopting new technology. Success comes from striking the right balance between innovation, governance and process improvement, ensuring digital transformation delivers meaningful and sustainable value to the business.

We would like to thank everyone who joined us for an engaging and insightful discussion, and to RSM for partnering with us on another successful event.
