Rutherford Cross is delighted to partner with Scotmid Cooperative in the search for a Financial Controller for the Funerals division.
Scotmid Co operative is Scotland’s largest independent co operative and has been at the heart of local communities since its establishment in 1859. Founded originally as St Cuthbert’s Co operative Association in Edinburgh, the organisation has built more than 160 years of experience serving members and customers across Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England. Today, Scotmid operates a diverse group of businesses including food stores, Semichem health and beauty stores, funeral services, Post Offices and a property division, with around 280 retail outlets and approximately 3,500 employees working across its operations.

The Financial Controller Funerals responsible for overseeing all financial management, reporting, and control activities within the Funeral Services division. The role ensures robust financial governance, supports strategic decision-making, and maintains compliance with regulatory frameworks specific to funeral operations and funeral plan products. The role will work closely with the Society finance team and senior positions throughout the business.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

  • Support development and implementation of divisional financial strategy
  • Provide data led analysis to support decision-making
  • Partner with senior operational management to improve financial understanding and profitability
  • Prepare monthly management accounts and variance analysis
  • Lead budgeting and forecasting processes
  • Deliver reporting packs for senior leadership
  • Oversee accounting, cash, banking, and procurement
  • Maintain strong internal controls working
  • Monitor cashflow and working capital
  • Work closely with Scotmid finance team to streamline processes
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards (FRS102) supporting audit requirements
  • Maintain regulatory compliance for funeral plan operations
  • Alongside Scotmid finance team, input to VAT, tax, and HMRC compliance
  • Ensure accurate, complete, and timely submission of all FCA regulatory returns and financial disclosures
  • Oversee the integrity of data used in regulatory reporting, including reconciliation to underlying financial systems
  • Maintain a regulatory reporting timetable and ensure all deadlines are met
  • Act as a key point of contact for finance-related regulatory queries from the FCA

Skills and Experiences:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • Senior finance experience an advantage
  • Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills
  • Power BI and other data analysis skills
  • Strong commercial awareness and business acumen
