A company that pushes boundaries, yet is steeped in over 100 years of history?  We are proud to be working with Heineken, the UK’s leading cider and beer business with an unrivalled portfolio of brands, to grow their tax team in Edinburgh.  The business is on an exciting journey in the UK, and the Tax Team plays an important part in identifying and driving continuous improvement in tax processes and procedures for the business.

The new UK Tax Manager will join the existing team of four qualified professionals.  Reporting to the Head of Tax this is an opportunity for a senior tax professional to broaden their career in a far reaching in-house role.  The UK Tax Team will manage processes for all taxes – direct and indirect – ensuring returns are accurate and submitted on time, and support the Group with tax reporting, advisory, treasury and insurance matters.

The purpose of this role is:

  • To provide effective business partnering to Heineken colleagues on UK tax matters, including engaging professional advisors to support transactions as appropriate and obtaining clearance from HMRC where necessary

  • To lead the internal tax reporting process, ensuring that senior management are provided with accurate and on time tax information
  • To lead on certain treasury and insurance matters as required by the business.

Key responsibilities:

  • Acting as lead point of contact on compliance matters for internal and external stakeholders, including HMRC
  • Lead the tax-planning process on specific transactions, whether tax initiated or commercial transactions initiated elsewhere in the group, with a view to minimising the tax liability of the Heineken UK group while remaining compliant with UK and overseas tax law
  • Ensuring that all direct and indirect tax, intrastat and ESL returns prepared by Heineken shared service centre (SCC) colleagues and/or external service providers are accurate and submitted on a timely basis
  • Responsibility for timely maintenance of all required registrations (e.g. VAT group, excise) and arrangements (e.g. group payment arrangement)
  • Responsibility for ensuring that all tax payments, claims and elections relevant to the Heineken UK Group are made on time

Candidate Profile

  • Qualified CA/ACCA ideally with ATT/CTA accreditation
  • Robust previous management experience gained within an in-house tax function of a UK or multinational headquartered business or significant senior management experience gained in a large professional services firm
  • Proven ability to organise and plan effectively and work with a high degree of autonomy
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to influence and challenge stakeholders internally and externally
  • Experience of coaching/educating people on tax matters
