c£55-£60K + Benefits

Role Scope

Based in the UK Head Office in Edinburgh the UK Tax Manager will report to the Tax Director and have daily liaison with the Reporting & Control team, the Business Performance & Analysis team, the Development & Legal team and the UK Management team. In addition there will be regular interaction with the Corporate Tax and Accounting team based in corporate headquarters in the US.

Role Purpose

Reporting to the Tax Director, the UK Tax Manager role will have the following accountabilities:

  • Manage the UK group tax compliance process
  • Responsible for timely and accurate submissions to HMRC in respect of all corporation tax and VAT matters, always ensuring the group position is optimised
  • Responsible for ensuring the relevant UK companies establish, monitor and maintain appropriate tax accounting arrangements to enable the completion of accurate tax returns in order for the Senior Accounting Officer (“SAO”) to sign a “clean” certificate
  •  Establishment/maintenance of documented policies in support of same
  • Assist Finance Team with periodic and annual production of current and deferred tax numbers and disclosures for financial statements under both UK and US GAAP
  • Liaise with HMRC and advisors as required in order to manage HMRC relationship with a view to maintaining current “low risk” status
  • Responsible for maintenance of the tax compliance calendar, risks and opportunities register and monthly status report for Corporate Tax
  • Responsible for tax assumptions and logic in models used for business planning purposes
  • Assist with Corporate Development opportunities (acquisitions or development of new projects) in the UK and eventually on international projects as well depending upon opportunities and business requirements

Job Description

Delivery of high quality tax information to External stakeholders – 25% of role

  • Review of all UK tax computations to ensure accuracy and compliance with UK tax law
  • Timely and accurate submission to HMRC of all UK CT and VAT returns/related matters
  • Maintenance of transfer pricing documentation (UK and cross border) for provision to HMRC if required
  • Maintenance of World Wide Debt Cap workings, Advance Thin Capitalisation Agreement workings and controlled foreign companies analysis for provision to HMRC if required
  • Liaising with HMRC and advisors as required in order to manage HMRC relationship with a view to maintaining current “low risk” status
  • Primary point of contact in respect of tax for statutory auditors

UK technical expertise – 20% of role

  • Determine corporation tax and VAT treatment of transactions undertaken by UK group companies
  • Research technical points/areas of uncertainty, documenting conclusions and making recommendations, ensuring tax risk is managed appropriately
  • Assist in identifying and appraising tax risks and opportunities across UK operations
  • Monitoring legislative policy developments (e.g. BEPS) and pro-actively considering how any changes may impact the UK operation
  • Undertake tax review of new contracts/ amendments to existing contracts
  • Provide technical tax support to all areas of the UK business as required

 

Maintenance of a strong control environment – 15% of role

  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate review is performed in all areas of tax compliance
  • Responsible for identifying the key tax risks within the UK operations and establishing/maintaining policies, procedures and controls as appropriate to manage risks identified
  • Responsible for ensuring a “clean” SAO certification can be made on an annual basis

 

International expertise – 10% of role

  • Manages withholding tax exposures
  • Support delivery of global compliance obligations e.g. Country by Country Reporting
  • Willingness to learn about other tax regimes as required by business needs

 Ad Hoc Projects – 10% of role

  •  Support UK and global growth initiative and other ad hoc projects as required (e.g. assistance with due diligence, financial model review, structuring etc.)
  • Seek to leverage technology to drive efficient, repeatable processes

 

Resource management – 5% of role

  • Formal and informal management of delivery from colleagues to ensure quality and timing standards are being adhered to

 

Qualification & Experience Requirements

  • Professional Accountancy/Tax Qualification, min 4 years PQE
  • Experience operating in a similar role, either in the profession or industry
  • Strong UK tax technical knowledge and motivation to keep up to date with changes in standards and regulation
  • Experience of SAO compliance best practice
  • Good working knowledge of Alphatax and Excel software
  • Proven track record of interpreting complex tax issues
  • Practical IFRS/FRS 101 and US GAAP experience
  • Understanding of energy businesses would be helpful but is not essential
