Consultant Spotlight – Harry Young

Harry started his recruitment career with a Scottish headquartered recruitment firm in 2019, gaining multiple promotions in his first years he finally headed their qualified finance recruitment offering in West Scotland before joining Rutherford Cross in 2021 to lead on the newly-qualified space in West & Central Scotland.

I joined Rutherford Cross for several reasons, but the most significant factors were the market presence of the business i.e., the quality of the mandates they worked, and the calibre of consultants working at the business and by extension what I could learn from them and how that would help me develop.  Finally, the perception of Rutherford Cross as a market leader in the senior finance space attracted me as I wanted to join the best business.

Working at Rutherford Cross has allowed me to significantly develop both professionally and personally. Being surrounded by industry leading consultants every day and observing how they work and working in partnership with them has fast tracked my own development and drives me to get better every day. Beyond that, the team feels like a real family; there is significant flexibility for me to operate how I wish, and I feel supported by my teammates and the senior leaders within the group.

There are many organisations that claim to be driven by purpose, but I have encountered very few that have gone to the same lengths as Rutherford Cross and the wider Livingston James Group to initially define their purpose and then to make sure it is followed. We have a set of values that filter down into everything that we do, this is important to me as a value led individual. I took some time to define my own personal values shortly before joining the business and found there to be significant synergy with the LJG values and my own, this made it feel like home straight away when I joined.

From a broader cultural perspective one thing that is important to me is that we have committees within the business responsible for various things including fundraising, social activities etc. I joined the Wellness Committee due to my background in fitness and I found it heartening to be a part of a business where we are proactive about the physical and mental wellbeing of the employees.

Our networking events schedule is also unrivalled – sometimes it feels like I am working in an events business as there is so much to get involved with. We have ‘Planning Your Career Journey’ events focused at newly qualified accountants that I now co-run, a charity Football tournament, our inaugural Golf event, and our Next Generation CFO series to name a few. The exposure and insight you get to the senior finance community from these events is unrivalled.

I am proud to work for Rutherford Cross and getting up every day and looking forward to coming into the office is something I cherish.
