Harry Thomson – Making the Move into Recruitment

Rutherford Cross consultant Harry Thomson shares his experiences of making the move from hospitality into recruitment nine months down the line.

My journey into working life started at the age of 16 when I was offered a role at a prestigious 5-star hotel based in the Perthshire area. This role provided me with my introduction to the world of work where I developed my interpersonal skills as well as the chance to push myself out of my comfort zone.

As time progressed on, I was offered roles with increasing levels of responsibility until I found myself in a management position where I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the leisure facility, a role I held for two years.

Making the Move into Recruitment

During the pandemic, like many others, I found myself contemplating the future and what a career away from the hospitality industry might look like. I knew that I wanted to build a career that was people focused and after some research, recruitment seemed like the ideal solution.

I made the move into Finance recruitment in 2021 with a boutique firm, then moved on to work with Rutherford Cross in April 2022. One of the things that stood out to me about Rutherford Cross was the focus on purpose and values and on building long-term relationships with both clients and candidates, rather than focusing solely on filling roles. This was important to me as I wanted a working environment that matched my values, and I was able to see this first-hand throughout my own recruitment process.

I am now three months into my role and really enjoying being part of such a high-performing team. The opportunity to learn, develop and challenge myself was one of the main reasons I decided to make a move.

Why Rutherford Cross?

For me, the deciding factor was the direction the business was going and the chance to join and grow out our footprint in the East of Scotland. This coupled with the chance to work with some amazing people within the Rutherford Cross team and the Livingston James Group was a real draw for me.

The way the business operates with a people-first approach that is initiated internally and echoed with clients and candidates was very attractive. Something that has stood out to me most in my short time at Rutherford Cross is that there is more of a shift to being a trusted business consultant rather than just a recruiter. This helps to provide candidates and clients with a better service tailored specifically to their career ambitions or business needs.

Three Key Career Journey Takeaways

  • When you are presented with an opportunity that you think will genuinely further your career even if you haven’t been in your current role for very long, focus on the opportunity rather than the timing
  • Find a business that has values closely aligned with your own and meet as many people in your interview process as possible to help you make an informed decision
  • Joining a business that is going through a period of change or growth will give you exposure to different challenges helping you grow your skillset and go further in your career
