Your Career Journey as a CA – Rutherford Cross Insights

Rutherford Cross’ Jonathan Donnelly was invited to take part in the ‘Your Career Journey as a CA’ webinar organised by Jason Cohen and Rebecca Hulton of the ICAS Glasgow Area Network.

Upon qualifying, many CAs view this juncture as their first opportunity to evaluate their options, assessing features of roles, and attributes of employers. Jonathan shared information about the range of clients Rutherford Cross work with and the career opportunities these organisations provide for newly qualified accountants.

Here, we summarise some of the insight shared with the event audience:

The Profession continues to offer great career prospects. Switching to a new area of specialism or simply changing firm to experience a different client portfolio can provide exposure that enriches development.

Much like a move into a Corporate Finance team, working for a PE Houses or a PE Backed Business offers exposure to deal making in a fast-paced environment.

The Public and Charitable Sector presents the opportunity to benefit society or work for a truly valuable cause.

Working for a Scottish Based Business allows for closer interaction with senior stakeholders and greater possibility to influence key decision-making.

The Drinks Sector provides an opportunity to work with exciting brands and tangible products that friends and family can easily relate to.

The Larger Corporates, much like the Big 4, presents scale and scope for career development and the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most successful businesses.

As well as a providing a flavour of the career options available to newly qualified CAs, Jonathan also discussed the process of choosing the right path. In short his conclusion is that whilst it is helpful to discuss this decision with; peers, mentors and a trusted recruitment advisor, fundamentally an individual must be aware of what will make them happy when assessing features of a role, a working environment, and benefits package.

The other speakers on the webinar were Laura Montgomery, Finance Manager of City Facilities Management, Murray MacOwan, Head of Commercial Finance at C&C Group and Ross McAdam, Investment Analyst at Clyde Blowers Capital, to watch in full please click here.
